The following project from the M.Ed. Educational Leadership program displays evidence of my learning and skills relating to the standard.

Key Assignment

Reflection on Coursework & Experiences

The purpose of standard five is for school leaders to demonstrate their ability to prioritize student learning and success through diversity, equity, and legal accommodations. The leadership standards writing task displays my exposure and experiences to this standard from a school leader's perspective. Within the leadership standards writing task, there is an interview with Mr. Terrence Yoder, former principal of Algoma Christian School and current president and CEO of the School of Missionary Aviation Technology. Mr. Yoder discusses the importance of equity in education by utilizing diversity differences and adhering to educational law in order to promote student success. Additionally, the leadership standards writing task contains my personal research on best practices for school leaders and the development of moral and ethical behaviors in schools.

During this project, I gained meaningful insight into the diverse world of education. I found this project to be powerful as it allowed me to dig deep into the meaning of equity in education and how, as a school leader, I can promote student learning and success by understanding and valuing the cultural, religious, racial, and ethical differences between students and teachers. I believe one of my leadership skills, related to this standard, is valuing equity and diversity in education. However, I believe I do have areas of improvement in this standard, specifically in the final indicator, as I would have liked to gain more experience and practice in engaging teachers in recognizing diversity in their own classrooms and using it to drive instruction.
